Car Not Starting Normally?

That moment that we all dread when the ignition will not start. You hear that loud screeching noise and you know something is wrong with your car. Your engine finally turns on after a while but you noticed that it took longer than usual to get your car started.

This is a warning sign of things to come. Your car is telling you something whenever you have just had a harder than usual start.

You Need to Get a Starting System Checkup Soon

The starting system consists of three parts:

  • Battery
  • Alternator
  • Starter

We will now go over each of these parts.

Battery

The battery is the first part of your starter. Your engine needs electricity from the battery in order to start. So without a functioning battery, your car is not turning on. Your dashboard might display a low battery indicator light.

The battery sends electricity to the starter, which activates the engine when you turn the key inside the ignition. Typically, the battery is the first component to fail when there are issues with the starter.

We have diagnostic tools to determine if the battery needs to be replaced. The battery is being recharged via the alternator, which we will discuss next.

Alternator

The second part of the starter is the alternator. If the alternator has issues you might have a similar low battery indicator just like you would with the battery. The alternator’s role is to keep the battery charged while the engine is running.

Keeping other electrical parts of the car supplied with electricity is what the alternator does. The alternator does this so that it does not drain all of the juice inside the battery. These electrical parts of your vehicle are things like the headlights, fog lights, brake lights, emergency flashers, turn signals, AC/heater fan controls, radio/sound system, GPS navigation and more.

Starter

The final third part is the starter itself. The starter is located under the engine, near the transmission. You cannot see the starter as easily as you can see the battery or alternator. The starter requires a lot of electricity to start the engine. This is especially true for cold weather, where even more electricity is needed.

The starter performs just as hard as the battery and alternator. All three of these parts

Can wear out over time and need to be looked at regularly.
