What is a Thermostat?
A thermostat is used to regulate temperature. Inside your car’s engine, there is a little valve. This valve controls whether to make your car hotter or cooler.
When the engine is on, it produces heat. Water contained within the engine keeps it cool. When the water gets really hot, then it turns into steam. This steam is not safe for your engine and cannot keep it cool.
The Cooling System
The cooling system controls the amount of heat that the engine produces. This is done using a water-based coolant inside a closed loop system. A closed cooling system is common in most car engines and helps keep engine temperatures low. This prevents the engine from being damaged if it gets too hot.
What Are the Parts of the Cooling System?
Radiator
The radiator is usually found at the front of the vehicle. The shape is rectangular and is made out of plastic and aluminum. The fins on the outside allow air flow to pass through. Rubber hoses and pipes from the radiator connect to the engine.
Hot water flows into the radiator, which then cools the water and returns it back to the engine. This lowers the engine temperature. Inside the engine, there is a water pump that allow the water to flow between the radiator and the engine.
Thermostat
The thermostat is found in the closed cooling system. This is a valve that opens and closes depending on the temperature of the cooling water. Cold coolant makes the engine perform at suboptimal levels where fuel is wasted. Hot coolant can cause the engine to overheat and damage other parts near the engine.
Newer vehicles might have more than one thermostat. This is used to control temperatures for passengers.
Do I Need to Replace the Thermostat?
If you see these signs, you might need a new thermostat in your car:
- Hot Radiator
- Engine Overheating
- Engine Under Heating
- Poor Acceleration
- Poor Engine Performance
- Temperature Gauge Fluctuation
Our Diagnosis and Repair Process for Thermostats
- Check for leaks in the cooling system using a pressure test and inspection
- Replace thermostat
- Fill with new coolant and bleed system
- Install new reservoir or radiator cap as needed
- Clear related engine codes
Most manufacturers suggest that you replace your engine coolant every four years.
